Hormonal Health and Imbalance Treatment

“When the hormones are out of whack, it is no joke!” ~Dr. Bonville

Maybe you know how it feels to have your hormones out of balance. Are you tired of mood swings, weight gain, hair loss, acne, low sex drive, irregular or heavy cycles, painful intercourse, or just feeling hot and flashy? Why endure monthly pain, excessive bleeding, menopausal symptoms (for male andropause click here (link to men’s health) and fluctuating emotions?

Let us help you feel like yourself again.

At Spring Integrative Health, our Naturopathic doctors (NDs) love helping women feel great in their body and solving the hormone puzzle! We can provide you with natural ways to balance your hormones and diminish these unpleasant symptoms.

Strategies our NDs use to balance hormonal health:

Comprehensive female hormone lab testing including blood, urine, and salivary testing

Harmonize all hormones in the body, not only female hormones but also metabolic, adrenal and thyroid hormones

Utilize bioidentical hormones exclusively for replacement therapy when appropriate

Employ a whole-life approach to menopause including physical health, mental-emotional support, lifestyle strategies, and relationship support

Balance not only hormonal health but also brain (neuro) chemistry for quick and effective symptom management

Empowering women to take control of their symptoms with individualized tools for symptom management while addressing the underlying cause of the hormonal imbalance

“Hormonal health does not have to be a struggle. When in balance, hormones can help you feel sexy, energized, intuitive, empowered and at home in your body.” ~Dr Bonville

Weight Loss

Want to look like the person you feel like on the inside? Want to feel fit and have more energy?

A naturopathic approach to weight loss might be just what you’re searching for.

Most conventional weight loss programs don’t work because they don’t address the underlying causes of the weight gain and they aren’t individualized for the patient. In contrast, at Spring Integrative Health, we approach weight loss from a naturopathic perspective, providing natural, safe, and effective options for a healthy diet and lifestyle, which promotes permanent weight loss. Hormonal wellness is a major factor in solving this problem.

There are many other factors that play into losing weight besides counting calories and exercising.

Genetics

Digestive health

Optimal adrenal and thyroid function

Leptin resistance

Metabolism changes

Food intolerances

Toxic burden/detoxification

Stress

Dehydration

Mindfulness and emotional health

Nutritional deficiencies

Hormonal wellness

And many other things!

At Spring Integrative Health, our Naturopathic doctors (NDs) customize a plan that fits both your body and your individual needs. From optimizing what is best for you to be eating and drinking to helping you establish a healthy exercise routine, we take into account your unique body chemistry to devise a plan that is best for you.

There are two key components to sustainable weight loss:

Addressing any underlying causes of the weight gain or inability to lose weight. If these key obstacles are not treated, weight loss and maintaining an ideal body composition are often an uphill battle.

Focusing on an ideal lifestyle rather than the perfect “weight loss diet.” Serial dieting and fad diets almost always focus on “calories in and calories out”. Though this works for some people to some extent, is it only one small piece of the picture (not to mention it also results in short-term weight loss followed by weight gain).

The bigger picture is about eating and living to support your body. This includes optimizing what you eat, what you drink, how you relax, getting adequate sleep and hydration, engaging in daily movement, and minimizing stress. When all of these components are taken into account and addressed, the results are lasting changes and a healthy body.

Whether you are someone that has struggled with weight gain and difficulty losing weight most of your life, someone that has just found weight loss to be difficult in recent years, or a person who needs a little extra help losing weight from the holidays or just want to be in better shape, our doctors can help you a plan that is perfect for you and easy to follow.

Find out how you can achieve your weight loss goals and maintain them today!

Tools we use to assist weight loss:

Genetic testing of specific for foods and exercise strategies specific to you

Hormone testing

Insulin and blood sugar testing

MTHFR testing

Vitamin and nutrient testing

Food sensitivity testing

Digestive and stool testing

Diet analysis

Meal planning and shopping assistance

And many more!

Chronic Fatigue/Adrenal Health

Are you feeling run down or have trouble making it through the day? Drinking that extra cup of coffee in the afternoon to keep going?

Have you been told you have chronic fatigue or adrenal fatigue and want to learn more about what that means?

Are you exhausted but can’t seem to get a good nights sleep?

Up to 4 million Americans suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and 80% of those are women! At Spring Integrative Health, our goal is to eliminate the underlying issues that cause the symptoms of fatigue because you deserve to feel alive and energized!

Although there can be many causes of fatigue, the one constant is how deeply fatigue impacts your quality of life. Our definition of fatigue is simply a lack of energy, drive or the vigor you once had. It may manifest as an energy plummet in the afternoon or it could be as debilitating as the lack of energy to get out of bed in the morning.

Symptoms of chronic or adrenal fatigue:

Chronic pain and inflammation

Insomnia

Poor memory

Depression, irritation, and anxiety

Very low energy, lack of motivation

Fertility support is a group activity.

Our Naturopathic doctors assess both partners for fertility issues and may do testing to determine if there are any issues preventing conception. Then, our NDs come up with a comprehensive plan to improve conception success. This may include supplements, dietary changes, or lifestyle modifications to treat hormonal imbalance in women and men.

General

Philosophy & Practice of Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic doctors (NDs) integrate the wisdom of nature with modern medical science to find the root cause of disease and to stimulate the body’s inherent healing processes. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are trained to discover the unique building blocks each individual needs to aid in this process using six naturopathic principles (listed below). Diet, lifestyle changes, exercise, botanical medicine, supplements, and other cutting-edge therapies are all tools ND’s employ. Naturopathic doctors may also use pharmaceutical drugs when necessary. NDs view the human body as a complex system and treat the whole person, not just a symptom or disease such as hypertension or breast cancer. NDs can perform minor surgery, and order laboratory tests and imaging studies to aid in their diagnosis.

Naturopathic Medicine Education & Training

Naturopathic doctors are trained as primary care physicians at four-year postgraduate naturopathic medical schools. NDs are required to gain extensive training through clinical internships in hospitals and medical offices before passing a state board exam to gain licensure.

Naturopathic Principles

First Do No Harm

Identify and Treat the Cause

Treat the Whole Person

Use the Healing Power of Nature

Educate Patients

Prevent Future Illness

Benefits of Naturopathic Medical Care

Identify and change patterns, habits, foods, or tendencies that create obstacles to optimal health

Learn about how your system works and what makes it run smoothly

Improve overall well-being through whole body approach to medical care

Feel great and prevent disease!

Primary Care

In Montana, naturopathic doctors (NDs) are licensed as primary care providers. This means that NDs can order labs, imaging, perform physical exams and can prescribe certain prescription medications.

Naturopathic doctors are able to perform the following exams:

PAP and pelvic exams

Annual physical exams

Pediatric well-child checks

Prostate exams

Screening sports physicals

NDs are able to order, interpret and manage:

Colonoscopies

Endoscopies

DEXA scans (bone scans)

Lab work (blood, urine analysis)

Mammograms

Other imaging such as: ultrasounds, CT scans, x-rays, MRIs, etc.

If you are searching for a primary care provider, consider establishing care with a naturopathic pediatric doctor for a holistic approach to address all of your health care needs.

Functional Medicine

Functional medicine is a system of medicine that focuses on the optimal functioning of the body, not just on symptoms or a particular diagnosis. This system of medicine aims to determine how and why illness occurs, and to restore health by addressing the root cause of disease.

At Spring Integrative Health, our Naturopathic doctors are highly adept at employing the functional medicine approach to solve the puzzle of your health. The puzzle pieces that make up your health include vitamins and minerals, hormones, brain chemicals, inflammatory and stress molecules, gut microorganisms, antibodies, pH balance, and much more. Our doctors assess how these components work together, and then use treatments that nourish and balance your biochemistry to improve your overall health.

Each person is a unique blend of molecules, emotions, and thoughts, and functional medicine considers each of these aspects when working towards health. The ultimate goal is to restore health and halt or prevent disease processes.

Not only do our doctors work to bring balance to your biochemistry, but they seek to understand the root cause of the symptoms or illness. Our doctors assess the structural strength, nutritional deficiencies, toxic burden, genetic abnormalities, oxygenation, inflammation and more of each system of the body: neurological, endocrine/glandular, cardiovascular, pulmonary, digestive, urogenital and others. We do this in order to uncover the sources of imbalance. Exposing these imbalances, whether they be compensations or weaknesses, differs from the conventional medical/pharmaceutical approach which aims to suppress or alleviate symptoms. By correcting any imbalance, weakness or compensation in the body, we help systems return to normal, healthy function.

The tools we use in functional medicine are dietary counseling, nutrient replacement, lifestyle management, and mental and emotional support, just to name a few. Health is not found in a bottle, whether it is a supplement or a medication. Through functional medicine, we give your body the tools and building blocks it needs to heal. Your body does the work.

What are the outcomes of Functional Medicine?

Identifying individual biochemical imbalances

Bringing balance to biochemistry for whole-body healing

Better energy, improved digestion, better sleep, overall improved sense of well-being

Identifying specific vitamins and nutrients that your individual system needs to run smoothly

Many people are curious about the thyroid gland and how it impacts their health.

Maybe you have heard from a friend, family member, or health blog about how important the thyroid is to your health?

Do you suffer from fatigue, weight gain, or hair loss?

Maybe you have been told your thyroid is “normal” but still experience symptoms of poor thyroid functioning?

Maybe you are treated for hypo or hyperthyroidism but still do not feel your best?

The Naturopathic doctors (NDs) at Spring Integrative Health know the importance of healthy thyroid functioning and hold a special interest in treating a variety of thyroid disorders. The thyroid gland may be little but it has a BIG job!

When it comes to thyroid medication or supplementation we believe that less is better! Our NDs employ a combination of nutrients, vitamins, herbs, nutrition, and medications when indicated to bring balance to thyroid function. Spring Integrative Health’s doctors know that thyroid health does not exist in a vacuum, and to successfully treat thyroid conditions we must almost always also pay attention to the entire hormonal system. This broad and mindful approach to thyroid health brings about balance in the least invasive, most nutritive way possible.

Thyroid Strategies used at Spring Integrative Health:

Functional and comprehensive thyroid lab testing, (one test cannot tell us everything!)

Optimize nutrients status for the production, conversion, and absorption of thyroid hormones

Use a functional medicine approach to thyroid health: assess the full hormone picture in addition to thyroid health (adrenal hormones, reproductive hormones, etc.)

Work with your primary physician or endocrinologist as needed

Work to find the optimal type of thyroid medication at the lowest dose when appropriate

Outcomes achieved with a Naturopathic approach to thyroid health:

Better energy

Ideal body composition and weight

Healthy skin and hair

Better sleep

Clearer thinking

Improved mood

Good bowel functioning

Increased strength

Integrative Oncologists apply the art and science of Naturopathic medicine to the field of cancer care and treatment. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) who specialize in oncology work in both hospitals and in private practices. They bring their wisdom, perspective, and experience to support patients who are given a cancer diagnosis on their cancer journey.

Naturopathic doctors specializing in integrative oncology have a deep understanding of the standard treatments utilized by medical oncologists, such as: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and hormone therapy. They know how best to work with both conventional and naturopathic therapies in a collaborative and integrative approach to cancer care. NDs are able to make patient-specific recommendations that are safe and have no known interactions with a patient’s current treatment plan, are evidence-based, and can help improve overall outcomes and quality of life.

The following principles are applied to naturopathic oncology:

Create a safe place for patients

Empower patients to make educated decisions for themselves regarding their treatment options.

Recognize all associated illnesses or trauma involved physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

Determine the underlying causes of illness by utilizing history, physical exam, lab tests, imaging.

Determine the best tool for the individual at any given time that supports the innate ability to heal such as: nutrition, supplements, pharmaceuticals, physical modalities, acupuncture, counseling, homeopathy, IV therapy, herbal medicine, etc.

Collaborate with all of the patient’s health care providers in order to best help and support the patient on their cancer journey.

What are the Outcomes of Integrative Oncology?

Create and hold a safe space for patients on their cancer journey.

Recognize all associated illnesses or trauma involved physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

Prevent and manage the side effects of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy, and immunotherapy.

Manage and recommend evidence-based naturopathic interventions for cancer care safely – without interfering with your current treatment.

Recommend lifestyle and nutritional support to help build and maintain a well-rounded healthy life.

Bridge communications with your medical oncologist – we work as a team for the best clinical outcomes.

Build a survivorship program to help you maintain optimal health and live your best life.

Digestion Basics

Digestion is the cornerstone of health. Perhaps you have noticeable digestive symptoms such as constipation, diarrhea, bloating or heartburn? But did you know that many medical conditions that manifest symptoms outside of the gastrointestinal tract can be linked to the health of the digestive tract?

Conditions we treat that have a known association with digestion:

Irritable bowel syndrome

SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)

Candida issues or SIFO (small intestinal fungal overgrowth)

Food intolerances, sensitivities, and allergies

Acne

Heartburn

Autoimmune conditions

Rosacea

Fatigue

Anxiety

Depression

Crohn’s disease

Celiac disease

Ulcerative colitis

Structural GI issues (hiatal hernia, ileocecal valve)

What are strategies we use to treat the digestion with an integrative approach?

We identify food intolerances, sensitivities and allergens and create a nutrition plan that works best for the patient.

Help to balance your microbiome by identifying unhealthy strains or overgrowth of probiotics or fungal/candida elements, and treat to balance and maintain a healthy gastrointestinal flora.

Assess the function of the gastrointestinal tract, and optimize it if faulty.

Communicate with your gastroenterologist – we work as a team for best clinical outcomes.

What are the outcomes of Naturopathic digestion support?

Eat without uncomfortable bloating, gas or abdominal pains.

The gut is the root of the tree – often by identifying gastrointestinal imbalances, your whole body looks and feels better. For example, clearer skin, less joint pain, improved mood, and healthy weight management.

Establish a healthy nutrition plan for optimal health.

Food as Medicine/Nutrition

“Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food” ~Hippocrates

Food is a key component of health and wellness; however, in our fast-paced world, it’s so easy to forget the basics.Seems simple, but many Americans struggle with food choice and how to adequately nourish themselves. Over the past several decades, American food culture has started prioritize ing convenience and speed over quality, and food is now more processed and further from real food than ever before.

It is normal to feel confused about making food choices with the influx of diets and fads in popular culture today.

At Spring Integrative Health, we want to help you find the right foods for your optimal health; we will uncover if your body responds best to a gluten-free, paleo, vegan, keto diet (or so many more), or even none of the above! We help you discern between fad and what is truly good for your health.

Food isn’t always the ‘quick fix’ but it is the lasting fix for overall wellness. Eating healing, nutrient-dense, and quality organic foods can dramatically shift your health for the better.

Holistic Nutrition

What is clinical nutrition + holistic nutrition?

Clinical nutrition is the study of the science behind food and its contents including vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Clinical nutrition takes nutritional status, recent blood work, and collaboration with your primary care physician into consideration to best support your wellness goals.

Holistic nutrition takes clinical nutrition one step farther by melding nutritional science with the optimal nourishment of the body while assessing the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual contributing factors of nutritional health in each individual. Food on your plate is just as important as the lifestyle practices, emotional health, mental health and connection to self. By combining these key elements, Holistic Nutrition Counseling can ultimately help an individual find BALANCE and success when it comes to food and nutrition in their lives. And with balance one achieves moderation, happiness, and wellness.

With the combination of education, empowerment, and mindfulness Holistic Nutritional Counseling creates a supportive environment to make gentle lifestyle upgrades without feeling stuck, overwhelmed or confused.

A visit with a Holistic Nutritionist at Spring Integrative Health usually involves the following:

An in-depth history of your current health status and your health goals.

What you have tried in the past that did or did not work for your nutrition and dietary goals

Review of any nutritional lab work or recommendations from your referring provider

Evaluation of mental, emotional or lifestyle issues that are preventing your success with food.

Grocery shopping and restaurant approaches for reaching your dietary goals

Strategies and mindfulness techniques to combat any challenges around food choices

A custom diet and lifestyle plan that will include recipes, snack and travel ideas and lifestyle hacks to set you up for success.

Outcomes of Holistic Nutritional Counseling:

Feeling empowered about what foods you CAN and SHOULD be eating and what foods may be problematic for your body.

Feeling informed. Learn how food can be medicine. Learn how to heal your body with food and nutrition.

Feel inspired. Find excitement with food instead of feeling stuck and overwhelmed. Healthy food can taste good and be easy to prepare!

Feeling energized. More nutrition can mean more energy and focus. Also better performance at work, at play and with athletics.

Feeling at home in your body.

Get rid of pesky symptoms like fatigue, inflammation, and weight gain.

SIBO

Do you suffer with common irritable bowel symptoms such as: bloating, constipation, abdominal pain, food sensitivities, passing excess gas, burping, and diarrhea? Are you interested in determining the cause for your gastrointestinal symptoms?

What is SIBO?

SIBO stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth and has been linked to many health symptoms, particularly those of the gastrointestinal system. SIBO occurs when there is an overgrowth of certain bacteria in your digestive tract. While these bacteria do not cause severe digestive symptoms, they can sure make you feel uncomfortable!

This overgrowth causes the bacteria to compete with the body’s ability to absorb nutrients, and when this happens, the bacteria produce large amounts of methane and hydrogen gases. These gases do not naturally occur in the human body and are only produced by bacteria. SIBO can be caused by many different things such as: certain medications (proton pump inhibitors, birth control pills, opiates, antibiotics), scar tissue and adhesions from abdominal surgeries, stress and anxiety, poor diet, and food poisoning.

SIBO is diagnosed by using a simple and non-invasive breath test that requires minimal prep and only takes three hours to complete. This test is completed in the comfort of your own home.

Medical conditions that are associated with SIBO:

Irritable bowel syndrome (constipation, diarrhea, bloating, abdominal pain)

Acne

Rosacea

Hypothyroidism

Chronic fatigue syndrome

Heartburn and GERD

Leaky gut, food sensitivities and/or food allergens

Fibromyalgia

Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis

Celiac disease

Scleroderma

Anxiety and depression

Restless Legs Syndrome

Ehlers Danlos Syndrome

A comprehensive and individualized approach to treating SIBO through Spring Integrative Health can include the following modalities:

Identifying, removing and/or addressing the cause SIBO

Antibacterial herbs

Prescription antibiotics

Dietary counseling including the Elemental Diet

Candida treatment (SIFO – Small Intestinal Fungal Overgrowth)

IV therapy

Nutritional supplements

Bodywork and massage

Colon hydrotherapy (colonics)

Healthy probiotic selection, support, and management

What are the outcomes of treating SIBO with Naturopathic medicine?

Reduction of GI symptoms of gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea

Less irritation from food, you can eat a larger variety of foods without becoming symptomatic

Reduced inflammation in the body

Weight regulation

Increased nutrient absorption and reduced vitamin deficiencies

Overall feeling better!

Decreased recurrence of SIBO after it has been treated.

Detoxification

Detox is one of those words we hear a lot, but what does it actually mean?

Detox (short for detoxification) is the body’s natural ability to rid toxins from the system. Toxins may include environmental toxins like pesticides and fertilizers, synthetic body care products, processed foods, building materials, and your own cellular waste.

Detoxification is the art and science of increasing cell metabolism (aka taking out the trash) and liver functioning. The liver is a key player in the detox process. While we can depend on the liver to take on the burden of filtering out our toxic load and keep our body running well, there are many things that inhibit the liver’s function, or that help the liver’s function. A healthy detox can support the liver and limit the stress of the process when the body is exposed to increased toxins.

Detox Benefits:

Feeling lighter, brighter, more energized

Better digestion

Less colds and flus

Balanced hormones

Improved mood

Glowing skin

At Spring Integrative Health our Naturopathic doctors and Nutrition specialists can give you a personalized detoxification program. We will break down the science of what happens in your body during a detox, and help you walk through it with peace of mind.

Here are our top 5 tips to overall liver support and detox:

Elimination: A huge part of your health is based on your bodies ability to eliminate efficiently. If you experience constipation or diarrhea, or both, that is a sign that your body needs support with detoxification.

Hydration: Your body is 70% water, so just simply staying hydrated can be a game-changer. Water helps to flush toxins and supports the livers overall detox process.

Exercise: Movement is essential each day to keep your body detoxing. Movement helps circulate the lymphatic fluid through your body and cleans the lymph system more efficiently.

Eat green food: The darker in green color, the better for your liver. Bitter leafy greens are known to be key in liver detox. Sneaking greens into your smoothies, or having a green drink a few times each week has great benefits for your liver.

Remove toxic foods from your diet If you are eating processed foods, or foods with long ingredient lists it’s likely that you are being exposed to chemicals, additives, and toxins. Ingredients to watch out for include hydrogenated oils, refined sugar, convenience foods and lunch meats filled with nitrates and nitrites. Most convenience foods, fast foods, and lunch meats have these problematic ingredients.

Autoimmune Disease

Are you struggling with an autoimmune diagnosis and looking for a way to reduce symptoms or slow progression?

Today, autoimmune disease is at an all-time high, especially in women. Many people with autoimmune disease feel like their body has turned against them, are confused about how to manage their symptoms and how to reduce the side effects of conventional medications.

We are here to help.

Naturopathic medicine can be extremely successful when addressing autoimmune conditions. At Spring Integrative Health, our Naturopathic doctors (NDs) offer individualized care by treating the whole person – mind, body, and emotions – and work to identify and address the root causes of disease. Naturopathic doctors use multiple tools to help decrease the body’s overall inflammation which tends to be an underlying theme with autoimmune and chronic health care concerns.

While the medical community is still unsure what causes many autoimmune diseases, at Spring Integrative Health we believe there are a few big factors that contribute to autoimmune disease that are in your control:

Inflammation

Infections (viral, bacterial, fungal)

Food intolerance and allergies

Thyroid and adrenal imbalance

Stress

By assessing and managing these factors we see a huge improvement in symptoms related to autoimmune disease. At Spring Integrative Health our goal is to empower you through education so you can take your health back and feel at home in your body!

Common (but not all) autoimmune conditions seen:

Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism

Ulcerative colitis

Crohn’s disease

Fibromyalgia

Lupus

Multiple sclerosis

Rheumatoid arthritis

Celiac disease

Sjögren’s syndrome

Polymyalgia rheumatica

Interstitial cystitis

Psoriasis

Endometriosis

Benefits of Naturopathic autoimmune support

Decreased pain and inflammation

Better functioning of areas of the body affected by the autoimmune process (for example joints or the thyroid)

A deeper understanding of your disease process

Collaboration with your rheumatologist – we work as a team for best clinical outcomes

Better energy

Improved mood

Reduction in side effects from rheumatological medication

Slowed disease progression

Hydrotherapy

Feeling under the weather, tired, or just burnt out? Dealing with a chronic illness or can’t seem to shake that cold or cough?

Then hydrotherapy, or “Nature’s cure” might be for you.

Hydrotherapy is the use of water for healing. It is simple, gentle, and very effective.

At Spring Integrative Health our favorite hydrotherapy is called Constitutional Hydrotherapy. Done in office, it is a spa-like treatment that involves applying alternating hot and cold towels to the chest and back.

Heat causes dilation of the blood vessels and lymphatics, increasing blood and lymph flow. Cold causes the constriction of blood and lymphatic vessels. Alternating hot and cold instigates a gentle pumping action that encourages the movement of immune cells and blood flow. Blood is the great nourisher in our bodies; it carries nutrients, oxygen, immune cells, inflammatory molecules, and cellular waste, just to name a few things. When we can improve blood flow, we impact its delivery of all of these beneficial things to the cells that make up our internal organs, our skin, our muscles, and the immune system.

Patients leave a Constitutional Hydrotherapy treatment feeling refreshed, relaxed, and centered.

Constitutional Hydrotherapy is indicated in many different types of ailments such as:

Sniffles—at the onset, throughout the course, and during recovery

Chronic fatigue and burnout

Gastrointestinal problems

Detoxification

Stress

Inflammation

Menstrual problems

Constitutional Hhydrotherapy is often applied in a series, and some patients will see results more clearly when they have more than one treatment. For this reason, at Spring Integrative Health we offer packages for Cconstitutional Hhydrotherapy sessions , and suggest scheduling one or two treatments per week.

Cheers to your health!
