Naturopathic oncology is the application of the art and science of naturopathic medicine to the field of cancer care and treatment. Naturopathic oncologists work in both hospital oncology settings and in private practices. They bring their wisdom, perspective, and experience to aid oncology treatment teams that seek the best positive outcome for their patients.

Aware that conventional medicine is not always enough, many people choose to include complementary medicine to address chronic illness. Naturopathic doctors specializing in oncology understand the standard treatments employed by medical oncologists and how best to work with them in a collaborative model of cancer care. They are also well aware of the many other therapies promoted to treat cancer and can help patients understand which might be useful and why.

The following principles are applied to naturopathic oncology as well as the care of other chronic illness:

  • Create a safe place for patients to discuss the suspicion of illness and/or the shock of diagnosis.

  • Empower the patient to make all decisions for themselves regardless of well-meaning resources.

  • Recognize all associated illnesses or trauma involved physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

  • Determine the underlying cause of illness by utilizing history, physical exam, lab test and/or imaging, and mind-body techniques.

  • Determine the best tool for the individual at any given time that supports the innate ability to heal such as: nutrition, supplements, pharmaceuticals, physical modalities, acupuncture, counseling, homeopathy, essential oils, etc.

  • Collaborate with care providers to support patient with chosen tools.

  • Guide patients as they improve their quality of life through the experience of chronic illness and healing.

  • Utilize clinical outcomes to better understand evidence-based medicine as it applies to chronic illness.
